Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Licking the Wounds

You don't want to know me
You want photo ops
Sound bites for the bridge club
Bragging rights
for a well-bred pup
Throw the bitch a bone
Do some tricks for the nice ladies
then kick the mutt with your Ferragamos
for getting your rug dirty
Is it any wonder
I shrink away
when you reach your hand out?
or that I shed my collar
along with my milk teeth
so long ago?

submitted (too late)for dVerse Poets Pub, Meeting the Bar, Allegory so for Open Link Night, Week 42

At a very busy place I frequent, I find myself in conversation time and again with one Peep or another. Too often, my friend(?) will spot another with which to converse. In the middle of my sentence, he is gone, over to a (I don't know!) more important peep?

Your allegory reminded me of how others sometimes behave, and that if I accept that, I'll be less insane the rest of the day.

And...Ma'am...I DID slip out of my collar a number of wonderful years ago. Thank you for making early scenes in many of our lives, so understandable.

Glad to be here again.

Oh dear! This could be a person almost -- but for the carpet! Well-described phenomenon--people wanting animals (and people) only to reflect on them, not to be themselves. K.

Just having something as a status symbol without really caring about it either way is sad. Like those people who get a dog just to chain it up in the back yard. That always makes me want to slap somebody until they come to their senses. Or until i get tired, whichever comes first.

This was bitter, acrid and well written. I love getting another perspective.
