Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

The Night I Fell

source
The night I fell
the snow sparkled like stars-
swinging from tree limbs,
dancing on the frozen earth
The air was cold
but the wind held her breath
as you kissed me
under the winking moon
Later, great gulps of hot chocolate
warmed our lips and throats
The dark December night
embraced us
as we embraced each other,
skin on skin.

For Allison on Graduation

The summer's heat can melt away the time
Remembering when you were still a child
When autumn's chill comes, you're no longer mine

I crave the hours that moved so slow and mild
When days were filled with toys and song and play
Remembering when you were still a child

If I could keep the coming months at bay
I'd relive every minute spent with you
When days were filled with toys and song and play

I crave the time when it was just we two
And when you leave to live life on your own
I'll relive every minute spent with you

I beam at how you've blossomed as you've grown
So proud to see the woman you are now
And when you leave to live life on your own

I'll marvel at the seasons past and how
The summer's heat can melt away the time
So proud to see the woman you are now
When autumn's chill comes, you're no longer mine.

True Confessions

Some nights
after the lights are off
 I fall asleep
while my husband talks to me
Sometimes
I wake myself up
and he doesn't even notice
Other times
I start to snore.

-----------------------------------------------------

I ate an entire box of Better Cheddar crackers
in one day
This happened more than once.

-----------------------------------------------------

People say
I'm a good listener
This is true
This is also true:
Sometimes
I pretend to listen
while my mind is elsewhere
I am good at this.

The Leaves Have Eyes

The leaves have eyes
You think no one sees what you do
You are wrong
The leaves are thousands of silent witnesses
They write my story in bark etchings
that you can't decode
The roots remember everything
When you say that I best be careful or
you'll bury me in the ground where no one
will find me, I just smile
The trees will know
They're waiting for me.

In Lace

Lace Woman by Charles Mallia
I want to wrap you up
in lace, like the gift
that you are
Tie you up
with a satin ribbon
and attach a tag that says
"Do Not Wait Until Christmas"

The Poetry of a Knife

source
The glint cut
right to left and back
Again and again, flashing
like the silvery zig zag of minnows
underfoot in the ocean,
too quick to follow yet
too mesmerizing to look away

This is what she remembered:

Not pain
for that didn't come until after
but a strange admiration
for the man's deft precision
An artist touching the canvas of her face
with a brush stroke here, there
Filling in lines and shadows
that render a portrait recognizable
And yet

When she reached up to touch,
 nose, cheeks, mouth,
they were unfamiliar and
her hands, when she looked,
were covered in blood
like red paint, sticky and crimson.

Seabird

Alex Alemany

I gaze outside the window at the shore
I watch the water kiss the dock below
The language of the swells tells me there's more
than you or I could ever hope to know

A seabird hovers just within my reach
She seems to understand my restless need
These bars of your cold cage I long to breach
Your unrelenting claims I cannot heed

I'd offer you my heart to keep the peace
but you've no love for sentimental things
Your endless expectations never cease
You want me as your trophy, without wings

You say you love me but it is not so
It never will be, so now I must go.
