Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Why I'm a Poet and Not an Athlete

I must admit I'm quite pathetic
In all sports or events athletic
Despite my need for exercise
To break a sweat I quite despise
Ever since my childhood
My agility has not been good
When I tried to kick a ball
The ball would stay and I would fall
Give me a basketball and net
And lots of air is all I'd get
On time trials run around the track
I was always in the back
When choosing up sides for a game
I'd wait til last to hear my name
So, no, I guess I can't compete
I'll never be a star athlete.

Yeah, me neither.

I think I can live with that.

thats ok...its over rated any way...word gymnastics have a much finer edge to them any way...

I'm with Brian on the value of word gymnastics. And they're generally safer.

I used to think I was a star on the tennis court, take solace in the fact that you write wonderful poetry!

I do believe you've made the right choice!

Cute and funny poem! I'm with the majority... word gymnastics are much more challenging.

But I can jump to conclusions, run myself into the ground, take a leap of faith and swim around in confusion. That should count for something!

Lolamouse, what an exquisite confession! Hey, at least you tried. Once, I tried out for basketball. We were instructed to dribble the ball as we squatted, and I ended up kicking the ball clear across the court. Needless to say, I never made the first cut. Ah well, c'est la vie.
In summer, just swatting the mosquitos away can be a sport, though, don't you think?

Awesome poem! I used to play a little bit of sports, despite my clumsiness. It has gotten worse with age though, so I don't attempt athleticism too often. :)

Oh you've described me! And this business of gymnastics doesn't help - that would require at least a little bit of grace, wouldn't it?

Competitive sports get a lot of glory, but not all of us are competitive. Athleticism could be moving your body in the garden or rocking babies, cooking.

I was never athletic, I thought, but I think I was just not competitive.

*smile* What a lovely poem! What you lack in athletics you definitely more than make up for in word-smithing! Well done! :-D
