Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Phantom

What lies beneath the mask you wear?
What awful truths you cannot tell?
Some fearful secret you can't bear?
What lies beneath the mask you wear?
A pact made in the Devil's lair
You seem a phantom sent from Hell
What lies beneath the mask you wear!
What awful truths you cannot tell!

What lies there--nobody will ever know! I have danced with the devil, then she stepped on my feet

Since we got on here at same time I HAD to say "Hello"

Love it...best line:

What lies beneath the mask you wear!

Great to see you at D'verse!

What if they are fun truths I cannot tell, can my mask stay on?..haha

Well played, love the rhyme pacing and at one point or another everyone puts on a mask in certain situations, some with deeper secrets than others as you say.

I have thought these thoughts with pain and disappointment in my day. You say it so well, and with strength.

Loved this Triolet, a format that is quickly becoming one of my favorites! Perfect words to go with this photo.

those masks try to hide our secrets, but the eyes give it away

Ohhh I liked the repetition of those two lines in much different contexts! Nice! So great to see you at d'Verse! :-D

We all have secrets, don't we? Interesting pic to go with your thought-provoking piece.

I don't know where Tess Kincaid finds these images, but they are always unique--this mask looks to me like it has two faces, one top, one bottom and your poem seems to illustrate a similar point--that there's no end to the masks, or knowing what's beneath them.

Love it. Especially how you've rhymed it. :)

All of my faces wear a mask
And beneath each mask, another
The layers interwoven and interleaved
Each hiding one mask from each other!
