Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Nocturna

source
As daylight turns to dusk and night descends
I focus on a bright and distant star
and think about the people I've called friends

From underneath a pale and yellow moon
I wonder how we've scattered out so far,
how some of them have left me far too soon

But in my dreams, their faces I still see
and pondering their fates and where they are,
I wonder if they ever dream of me.

In the Sunset

Edward Hopper House at Dusk 1935
In the sunset
where the day hides its most vulnerable moments
I think of you
In the most tender hour
between light and dark
I still feel the ache
of a lost friendship.

Rabbit Risen

source
I don't believe in miracles
but you've been resurrected
I watched as you died
and I prayed for the miraculous
and now
you rise
like a beautiful, crazy Jesus
screaming "Holy shit, y'all, I'm back!"

Belief and doubt
do a tango in my head
til I'm too dizzy to think

God and I have a tenuous relationship
I want to believe all the promises
but what if they're lies?
What if faith is just gullibility?
What if doubt closes a window?
I believe what I see
and I see you here
Now

Hallelujah!

Serenity

Suffering is no more
Surrounded by much love
Soaring free from fetters
Suffused with a new hope
seen with eyes become clear
Such pain you have carried
Such strength lies in your grace

You

How dare you?
You slipped under my shell like water
when I didn't even know
I was thirsty
I wasn't looking for a friend
I thought I was complete
but you showed me what was missing
introduced me to passions
asleep for so long
I had forgotten their names
Now I drink your words like wine
I need you like a drug
Damn you
I never wanted this
but you live in the contours
of my mind
you echo through the spaces
in my heart
You are within me for always now
like a virus.

Bringing You Home (for Micael)

So
it's time
for
good bye
You're leaving
for good
where
I can't
follow you
I don't want just
memories
I have
ink
paper
canvas, paint
I will
bring
you back
home.

October Blue

Thinking of the friends I've lost
Warm mist hanging in the air
and wondering about the cost

Autumn wind
blows right through me
Was there one who
really knew me?

What happened?
What did I do?
October blue

Looking up at strange clouds floating
Wondering if it will rain
Feeling sorry for myself
when I think of us again

Have to laugh despite it all
You understood absurdity
Mirrors for each other, you
would not believe what you could see

Hard to find
someone like you
October blue

Red and yellow
leaves beneath my dirty shoes
Distant memories
mixing with the autumn hues

Sometimes I wish
that I fit in
when I think of
you my friend

Even now
I still miss you
October blue.

For Rabbit

In a field of wheat I search for
you, my friend
You are a cagey creature
The minute I think
I have a grasp of you, you
disappear
only to emerge, the tip of your ear
waving from behind a stalk of wheat
saying, "Follow me!" or
"Don't. I don't much care."
I always follow
Like Alice's White Rabbit, I
follow you
and we play in your magical
strange
sad
funny
beautiful Wonderland; then
you slip away
and I learn how
to make some wonders myself
But don't you ever think
that I've forgotten you, my friend
I've come to this field of wheat
looking for that jaunty ear
waiting for you to
