Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Pretty Things

Let's talk about the pretty things
Magnolia blooms and katydids
The fireflies and summer ponds
Bright red silks and lemon pies

Why bother with life's mundane chores?
When you can just say Fiddle Dee!
A lovely face and spirit fine
Are not meant for drudgery

Let's keep the conversation light
Companionship is meant to please
No need for bookish discourse, dear
And world events are such a bore!

Of course you're free to flatter me
A girl so loves to hear her name
And in return I'll sing your praise
A small white lie is not a sin.

I also love the last line. I also enjoy the progression of seriousness. From lemon pies and "Fiddle Dee" to "a small white lie is not a sin."
