Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Sometimes We Must

Sometimes we must destroy to build
Let go of the common to find the rare
Old structures upturned and new soil tilled

Though we may not believe we are skilled
We haven't the strength and do not dare
Sometimes we must destroy to build

So difficult to be strong willed
But inertia is too much to bear
Old structures upturned and new soil tilled

Though we breathe, the heart is stilled
We can not grow in stagnant air
Sometimes we must destroy to build

Create a place to feel fulfilled
Where one finds joy beyond compare
Old structures upturned and new soil tilled

Too many spirits silenced and killed
Find that thing for which you care
Sometimes we must destroy to build
Old structures upturned and new soil tilled.

A Musing

Calliope, bestowing words as your gift
We are blessed to be touched by such a muse
With voice of beauty and wisdom, you inspire and uplift

You visit dreams of poets with thoughts adrift
Daughter of Memory and of Father Zeus
Calliope, bestowing words as your gift

Created to lift sorrow and heal the rift
Conflict is quelled with words meant to defuse
With voice of beauty and wisdom, you inspire and uplift

One of nine dancing your praise in a shift
Crown on your head in golden hues
Calliope, bestowing words as your gift

But to your own art our thoughts now drift
Stylus in hand, what are your clues?
With voice of beauty and wisdom, you inspire and uplift

Blank is the tablet you always lift
Your words, offerings for we mortals to use
Calliope, bestowing words as your gift
With voice of beauty and wisdom, you inspire and uplift.

The Saints

We are from water and to water we return
True believers baptized in the muddy surge
The water gives, the water takes, our children learn

We build our homes, we catch our food, respect we earn
The waters come, our land, our lives, our hopes submerge
We are from water and to water we return

Tears are cried, rain pours from skies, the waters churn
Both saint and sinner taken in unholy purge
The water gives, the water takes, our children learn

Displaced, divided, in our dreams of home we yearn
Diaspora upon us from this watery scourge
We are from water and to water we return

Persephone dragged back to Hell, another spurn
But as spring follows, just as surely we'll emerge
The water gives, the water takes, our children learn

Our eyes reflecting flames, we watch our water burn
God or man, upon our land the fates converge
We are from water and to water we return
The water gives, the water takes, our children learn.

Status Migraine

She swallowed the pills and said goodnight
It hurt too much to even cry
She closed her eyes against the light

She counted her breaths, her chest so tight
The bed, her nest, on which she'd lie
She swallowed the pills and said goodnight

Tired of fighting the noble fight
Confronting her nemesis eye to eye
She closed her eyes against the light

Blurred edges between wrong and right
It made no difference, so why try?
She swallowed the pills and said goodnight

She prayed in vain, in pain, in spite
Her body was weak, her spirit dry
She closed her eyes against the light

Her mind a blank, a board wiped white
Again another small death she'd die
She swallowed the pills and said goodnight
She closed her eyes against the light.
