The Migraine Monster

by isabel

Even when you're not here
you're here
You're an evil shadow
I cannot escape
A blood curse
passed down from grandfather to mother to me
and now to my daughter
How many generations will you devour?
What will sate your hatred?
You sap joy
Extinguish willpower
Day and night mean nothing to you
You find me in dreams
and turn wakefulness into a nightmare
The constant fear
of hearing your footsteps
just beyond perception is
the worst
Just waiting for
 your next attack.

I have never been one to get headaches, but I have heard that migraines can indeed be 'monsters.' I can definitely feel this in your poem. Thanks so much for linking with Poetry Jam!

Oh, I can so sympathize with this one...my mother, mother in law, and husband all suffer horribly with migraines, and it looks like my daughter will as well. Not sure how I managed to luck out in that regard. Truly a monster to be feared. Very nicely written, and thanks for sharing it with us over at Poetry Jam!

ugh...what a monster to deal with as well...like the bit of the fear of hearing its steps creaping up...ugh...know a few that suffer from them...
