The more you keep
it down the more it grows
It thrives in
places where there is no light
The more you try
to hide the more it knows
It taunts you
when you lie awake at night
You never know
when it may want to play
A game of cat and
mouse inside your head
And if you try to
make it go away
The longer it
will stay with you instead
It visits you in
dreams so dark and deep
In wishes and in
secrets long rejected
The beast will
keep on eating you alive
Until you hold
it, make it feel protected
For once you see the
shadow face to face
You see that it's yourself you must embrace.

OH MY GOODNESS! This is so profoundly and wonderfully true, especially the last lines. LOVED! THIS! This is the kernel of the journey, right here, kiddo. And you nailed it.
dang...nice...and true as well...the shadow is already there...and you must embrace it...and at the same time yourself...
i never guessed the ending...

Back at the house but living only in half of it. Just coming to the realization how much personal wall hanging art work purchased or from friends we lost in the flood.
This blog of friends keeps fond memories alive
Wow! The couplet really tied up your quatrains to perfection. This sonnet contains a powerful message for your readers.
Truly this is a wonderful poem. We definitely have to make friends with our 'shadow self,' I think and bring the shadows to the light of day!
Thanks for sharing in Poetry Pantry. I am late in making the rounds, but appreciative of your support nonetheless.
A lesson we all must learn.
So very true - love the illustration too!
