Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

The Girl Who Loves Winter Wakes

Snowy Dreams by Natalia Drepina
The Girl Who Loves Winter
sleeps through the summer months
Impenetrable
to the sun's assault
She dreams
of a white fox
If you look closely,
you might see her silvery whiskers
and her ivory coat,
soft as elder down
The Girl Who Loves Winter
begins to stir and stretch
She lifts her head
just as you are bringing your plants indoors
before the first frost
Lento heartbeat
quickens to restless accelerando
as she steps into the cold
The Girl Who Loves Winter
raises her head to the granite sky
Snowflakes fall on her eyelashes
like butterfly kisses
from a long lost love.

The Girl Who Loved Winter Sleeps

The girl who loved winter
knew warmth
Kissed by a dream
Morpheus seduced
She slept

Snowflakes fell
like sand in her eyes
The wind rocked her
in its icy arms
and sang to her a haunting lullaby

She slept
a deep and primal sleep
A she-bear in her cave
Embraced by long black hair
A blanket of herself
thick and sweet-smelling

The girl who loved winter
cossetted by the cold
felt warm
The winter sheltered her
like a puppy wrapped in an eiderdown quilt
A small beating heart
within the vast whiteness.

submitted for Imaginary Garden With Real Toads, Sunday Mini Challenge, First and Last Lines (in which we are to take a last line from a previous poem and make it the first line of a new one.  I used two last lines: The Girl Who Loves Winter III and The Longing and made them my first three lines of this one.

The Girl Who Loves Winter III

Winter breeze by Pure-Poison 89

The girl who loves winter
feels lonely
in her snow globe
She talks
to the ghosts of her breaths
and dances alone
to the music of icicles dripping
and windsong

One night she prays
to her favorite snow angel
for someone to love
Come morning
she finds frozen earth
a sodden feather
and puddles of angel tears

The girl who loves winter
feels cold
in a way that she doesn’t like
This scares her

She grabs
fistfuls of snow
She builds
and builds
The girl who loves winter
builds a snow lover
with branches for arms
stones for eyes
holly berries for a mouth
ready to receive her lips

The girl who loves winter
kisses her lover
Lips blue upon blue
Cold upon cold
She is embraced
by arms just born
Caressed by hands
new to touch
The girl who loves winter
knows warmth.

The Trouble With Golems

The girl who loved winter
was lonely
and cold

She liked the cold
but the loneliness
made her cry

Her tears were warm
and salty
like a good melancholy broth should be

The girl who loved winter
wanted to wrap herself around someone
to feel the kisses of lips, not just snowflakes

to feel the nip upon her neck
of something other than
the cold wind

That night, the girl who loved winter
wished upon all the stars
in the winter circle

Upon rising, she found
not a lover
but cold, hard earth

Never one to take ‘no’ for an answer
the girl who loved winter
set to work

She put on her robe
(she didn’t have a white robe, just pink
but it soon became white with snow)

She kneaded
She molded
She wrote of truth and of her god

The girl who loved winter
made a golem
and told it to love her

At first it was great
an attentive yet silent lover
always at her bidding

But then she started feeling bored
Suffocated and, frankly,
all that mud everywhere was getting tiresome

The girl who loved winter
knew it was time for the golem to die
But how does one bury a pile of earth?

The girl who loved winter
buried the golem under a blanket of snow
with a snow angel on top.
