The Circus

When the circus came to town
We got tickets for the show
Underneath the big, striped tent
We sat in the top row

We ate some cherry sno cones
And we laughed at a sad clown
But when the acrobats came on
My tears came falling down

How can I explain it
That sometimes little things bring it all back

I'm sorry

I wish I could contain it
But sometimes my thoughts jump a train

Don't worry

It's just that I thought you would be the one
To hold me up if I should stumble
But you were holding someone else
And you just let me fall away and crumble

Now I feel like I am walking
On the high wire all alone without a net
And though I have forgiven you
It's still too soon to say I can forget

So let's just watch the lion tamers
Laugh at all the jugglers and the clown
And maybe I'll forget her name and
All the things you did to bring me down

And maybe I won't cry next time
I see the acrobats
When the circus comes to town

Me and the Beasts

Each night I sleep with three furry beasts
They snuffle, they tussle, they snore
They covet the covers, they purloin the pillows
I often get pushed to the floor!

Each night I sleep with three furry beasts
It's so cozy and warm when they're near
But sometimes things get a little too close
Which one is that licking my ear?!!

Each night I sleep with three furry beasts
One's big, and two are quite small
But with three men and me in one little bed
It's a wonder that I sleep at all!

Dirty Blues

Why buy the cow
Come get the milk for free
Let's skip the seduction
And get straight to the deed
I'm ready and I'm willing
And I know what you need
So forget about her
And take a ride with me.

Games are for children
I don't wanna play
I saw you and I want you
Ain't no shades of gray
What we're doin' is wrong
Don't try to pretend
If you believe in God
Start making amends.

Why buy the loaf
Come get the slices for free
My mama always told me
That's no way to be
But mama's not around
And I don't plan to tease
So come over to me baby
Bring me to my knees.

Battle Creek Cypress Swamp

The trees are older than our cares
I walk beneath a cypress sky
I hear the barred owl's plaintive cry
And soon forget the day's affairs.

The birds and frogs sing joyful prayers
The breeze breathes like a lover's sigh
The trees are older than our cares
I walk beneath a cypress sky.

I spy a young deer unawares
The cypress watch us live and die
The creek keeps flowing by and by
Its secrets with the earth it shares
The trees are older than our cares.

Beauty Is

Thank you, Jingle and Poets Rally!
I went to look for beauty today
I needed to see that it still existed
After a morning of encounters with ugliness
foul words spit at innocent people
a father yelling at his one year-old son
a long, headache inducing waiting room purgatory
And dates with distress
     too much blood
     that suspicious lump
     one more test
and just one more, just to be sure
Fled to the grocery for something pretty and tasty
And found the fish wasn't fresh
And the gossip was stale as well
But the kid in the check-out lane cracked a lame joke
And it set us all to laughing
And for a moment
Everything seemed beautiful.
