It's Not Art Unless It Has the Potential To Be a Disaster

Photo by Christopher Jobson for Colossal
The gallery’s ready
The artist is in
The crowd stands waiting
For it to begin
The doors are open
The Chardonnay flowing
Critics’ heads nodding
With insiders’ knowing
Wallets are bursting
With checkbooks and cash
While patrons muse anxiously
“Genius or trash?”
The gasp is collective
Rejection? Disdain?
“It’s perfectly awful-
He’s done it again!”

Laughing...so true. Have to say, I love art, but the art world, not so much...

I think it is a shame that people only buy art because it may become valuable. One should buy what moves them. Fun poem.

Ha! This is super clever, Lola. I was married to a painter for some years and spent some time with the NY art scene--it is so extreme as you've caught! Thanks. k.
