Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Buried Deep

Winter's whispers gather in the oaks
Summer's secrets buried now in snow
Trees that once blazed with the fires of fall
Ash-like grey pierced with the black of crow

Limbs that sported pumpkin colored suns
Colorless as water's own reflection
Can not hearts have seasons of their own?
Love withstands the chill of disaffection

Though I try to speak of this to you
Snow lays its cold blanket over voice
Membrane between me and what I want
Hope you understand I have no choice.

relationships do have seasons...and some of them are hard to live through...i guess there is that hope that seasons change and new life can once more burst forth...that birth process though is not without pain...

I like the contrast and descriptiveness of the first two stanzas...and the mystery in the final stanza, especially the very last line.

I love the "deepness" in this poem. I do think things can be buried deep both in winter and in summer; and I also think that hearts DO have seasons of their own. Sometimes they correspond with the exterior weather, sometimes not. Thanks for participating in Poetry Jam!

Besides the deep sadness that lurks in this poem the words and images are lovely. I especially like the description of winter in the first stanza. You undoubted have experienced snowy winters. Bravo.

I look forward to the winter you described ... snow and all.

File this under "N" for "nuanced"!

Winter is approaching, true enough! And we remember how it had been with people warm and cold just as the seasons. Great verse!

Hope you're ok, lolamouse. To this I say:

Do not disdain portrayals of Love
nor feign affection
but receive with open arms and heart
life's every emanation
for Loves they falter and tend to fade away
and hearts they get scorned
and cry from day to day
do not fold within
like flower sleeping
at the end of it's season
but always leave a little room
to start again

Oh, by the way, lovely and wonderful portrayal of this time of the year.

Winter can put it's cold pall over everything, at times. That was perfect. And a bit "chilling".

nene: Thank you for your concern and your lovely poem! I am doing fine. Always get a tad melancholy when the days get shorter and colder but I'm out of the deep blue funk of earlier. Thanks for thinking of me!

Liked this very much Your words and imagery speak of winters drabness well and yet this is my favorite time of year.

Well, little mouse lola, this was written by a mighty mouse. A very strong hand here, in images, meter, message.
Wow.

Beautifully colourful concept of thoughts too deep to express...

This poem feels sad and true. I was especially caught by "does not the heart have seasons too nad the idea of membrane between one and what one wants. I've felt that. You also really catch the colors of fall and their absence in winter. Here in Texas we still have color, but not much longer. I will be looking for more of your work by following here.
