Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Because Sometimes I Forget To Tell You All the Reasons Why

You thank me for dinner even when it's not good
You trust me completely like no one else could
In bed with two dogs, we cuddle together
We share an umbrella when it is bad weather
You follow my blog; you read every poem
With one little look, my true thoughts, you know 'em
When I am stressed, you scratch my back
For making me laugh, you have the knack
You take me on dates to go out to eat
You buy me Twizzlers because you're so sweet
We like the same movies and the same books
In sweats and no make-up, you like my looks
You admit when you're wrong when we have a fight
You tell me you love me every night

I love you.

Elephant Footsteps

image courtesy of Magpie Tales 85
You padded in
and touched my heart as quietly
as elephant footsteps
You brought the rain
and washed from me the
smoke and soot that had
choked and blinded
I climbed upon your back
together we flew
with the clouds

Evening Song

The evening sings for us
Listen
Mourning doves coo their couplings
Crickets trill mating songs
The barred owl searches out his partner
and the chaos of the day is quelled

The evening paints the sky for us
A watercolor tableau of
crimson bleeding into gold
azure into indigo
The fading light softening the edges of the day

The evening air is perfumed for us
Late summer jasmine
mingles with rose petals and anticipation
We inhale the intoxicating balm
and let it seep into our pores

The evening sings for us, then
quiets to a hush and
makes its graceful exit; for
the night's song
is ours to sing.

Hush A Bye

Our instructions for Poetry Jam this week were to write a poem inspired by or using a line from a song. My song was "Hush A Bye," a traditional lullaby which was heard at our home sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary. My parents often sung it to me as a good night song, with my father strumming his acoustic guitar. You can hear the song here:

Hush a bye
Don't you cry
My daddy sang to me
The guitar he strummed
As mama hummed
My childhood melody

When I would weep
Or fight with sleep
They'd sing hush a bye
Was like a drug
A soft, warm hug
A deep, musical sigh

Now you have me
And I sing off key
And I can't play a note
But I hope I'm not wrong
That you find love in my song
And in all the words that I wrote

When you are grown
And on your own
Will you think of me?
And will you hear
My song in your ear
Wherever you may be?

Hush a bye
Don't you cry
You are mama's star
I'll wrap you in love
As snug as a glove
No matter where you are.

Prince Morphine

Rode up on your white horse
I was face down in the mud
Said, "Hey, man, wanna buy a girl a drink?"
Offered me your gloved hand
Fixed me up real nice
Asked me to come home with you
I didn't  think twice

I wanted a Prince Charming
But I got you instead
I got Prince Morphine
Sleeping in my bed

Asked for a dozen roses
You tucked a poppy behind my ear
You sing me lullabies until my passion's doused
Your sheets are real soft
But your love makes me itch
I don't feel the pain no more
But I don't feel shit

I wanted a Prince Charming
But I got you instead
I sleep with Prince Morphine
I feel like I'm dead
