Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Cityscape

Image by Flickr.com, courtesy of Al Brady/ HAWKEYE

He stumbles
Along merciless sidewalks
Mumbling
Cursing
Mind assaulted by unseen demons
The damage tangible
Dignity and desire
Evaporate like sweat in the sweltering heat
It’s simply a question of survival

Passersby avert their eyes nervously
Flickers of humanity doused by fear
Could I fall this far?
Permitting the thought to drop
Down the street grate
With their secrets
And their cigarette butts.

City

source
Tunnel
vision opens
grey monsters towering
torn tenements
evil intents
tense movements
quick quick quick
can't stop
can't look at map
tourist trap
don't get trapped
don't smile
don't make eye contact
don't get conned
don't get
beat beat beat
Pulse of the city beats
faster and faster
feel the blood throb
flash mob
flash flesh
fresh flesh
walking the street
looking to score
looking to scare
looking scared
scarred
looking
looking
City don't care.

The City

For him there was no prom
He walked across the stage at graduation
There were a few claps
And a few more snickers
He packed his bag, hugged his mom
And left
He had no delusions
That he would be better loved
In the city
But at least there
He could find
Places to hide
