Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Distance = Pace X Time

source

Perched on the ledge of adolescence, we
were too timid to jump
but too bold to uproot and climb
down
So we skimmed the surface
Tasted only a slice when we wanted
the whole pie
Curious fury stilled
only to shake loose each time
Your eyes shone blue topaz
Your tender growl
mingled with shrill, girl giggles
Green passion urged me onward
Propelled me
toward your freckled mouth
But you were wending your way toward
someone else
something more typical than I
could offer
So I stood in your dust
Bit my maiden aunt lips and
Tasted  grit in my teeth.

Strawberry Lemonade

Kristen of Twinkle, Twinkle is hosting the second round of Summer of Color. This week's
challenge is Strawberry Lemonade. She based all of the challenges on ice cream inspirations.
(Thanks to Ella, of Ella's Edge, for posting about this cool challenge!)

First, some playing around with some of my photos and Pic Monkey (such an addicting program!)

and now, a poem...

Bonne Belle flavors
latched on belt loops
Maybeline kissing potion
tucked into back pockets of tight jeans
Strawberry lemonade lips
glossed and giddy
pink and pretty
shiny and shy
Could boys' kisses ever taste as sweet?

Too Young

Little girls lost
Stumbling in the middle school maze
Dazed
Braces and bras
Awkward and powerful
Stuck between Barbies and birth control pills
Summer lemonade stands and summer lovers
Looking for suburban supermen
to fly us away
take us anywhere but where we were
Magic men
to perform an alchemy
transform us
We found instead snot nosed boys
with dirty fingernails
men with wandering hands
and dirty minds
The music promised
lipstick and leather
adrenaline fueled dreams
We knew the words like
our own heartbeats
Sang them like a prayer
a supplication
Waiting for a divine god, goddess
to answer as we waited
for our confidence to grow
with our breasts
We watched the wild ones
studied them with awe and envy
and a little fear
Denim and leather
Mullets and swagger
We didn't know if we wanted to
be them
or be their girlfriends
Barracudas or
butterflies
but we ached to be free.
