Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Dreamboat Annies

Windswept through adolescent anomie
Trying to find a place to take root
an identity to shelter me
No clue what I wanted
only this-
Someone to want me
To be diaphanous
desirable
To be a Stevie or
a Dreamboat Annie
I listened to the music like a disciple
and though I couldn't play a note
I wanted to join the band.

my friend and I in a lame attempt to be Ann and Nancy

Forgotten Roads

Big Sky Road by Ella Wilson

You love to walk the forgotten roads,
the ones with weedy, overgrown shoulders
and missing road signs,
orphaned roads
that let you turn down the volume
on the clatter and chatter,
feel the earth under your feet
and watch cloud shapes coalesce above.

Forgotten roads
let you take time
to remember
your name.
They don't hurry you
to get anywhere;
they honor you
right where you are.

Even as the milky clouds
grow ashen and somber,
you walk.
You walk
as raindrops tease,
then course down in a cavalry of wet.

In the petrichor
you smell the birth of another chance
and feel yourself
cleansed of artifice,
shining like a new penny
on the asphalt.

Walk On the Ocean

Lavallette beach, NJ
Slate grey sea, wet sand
Footprints beside seagull tracks
Jagged shells, smooth stones
My soul holds abundant calm
Hand in hand, lacking nothing.

Receiving Communion

Sometimes you don't notice a thing
until you feel the lack
I never felt like a Jew
until I was the only one around
in a small South Carolina town
My speech became a foreign tongue
my holidays unacknowledged
my religion suspect
my food nowhere
Shared memories
shared recipes
shared experiences
vanished like the 'g's on the ends of words
On a visit home they returned
as I opened the front door
Enveloped in thick, fragrant air
a big shiny pot atop the stove
slowly simmering golden heaven
Parting lips anticipated warm luscious liquid kisses
a soupçon of salt
to keep it interesting
and more...
fluffy white clouds succumbed to my spoon
little round angels in heaven's tub
I swallowed the whole show
This was my communion
