Snowy Dreams by Natalia Drepina |
The Girl Who Loves Winter
sleeps through the summer months
Impenetrable
to the sun's assault
She dreams
of a white fox
If you look closely,
you might see her silvery whiskers
and her ivory coat,
soft as elder down
The Girl Who Loves Winter
begins to stir and stretch
She lifts her head
just as you are bringing your plants indoors
before the first frost
Lento heartbeat
quickens to restless accelerando
as she steps into the cold
The Girl Who Loves Winter
raises her head to the granite sky
Snowflakes fall on her eyelashes
like butterfly kisses
from a long lost love.

That is so beautiful.
Since I first read Keats' Ode to Autumn, I have loved images of seasons personified. Your wonderful descriptions here really made me happy in the reading - I could imagine the girl waking up as the rest of the world went into hibernation.
nice bit of magic in this...i like the opposite in this....most life hibernates in winter and yet she is opposite and embraces it as well...the snow as a lovers kiss...pretty cool...
I'm getting all Caliban in trying to provide a coherent why to my wherefore, but boy howdy, do I love this piece.
This is really beautiful.
Yes, pure Fantasy! I do think there is much to love in winter, and you list the best of it here. I love the really luscious descriptions countered by the matter of fact placemarker"just as you bring your plants in," something I do with clockwork regularity the last possible second before the real cold snap--it is indeed the beginning of winter. Loved this, LM. Neat pic as well.
The girl who loved winter would have to be fantasy for me.
I know a woman like this . . .
I am a woman who does not love winter ... I did love your poem.
I love your poem though I don't like winter too ~ Enjoyed this one ~
I just added this page to my favorites. I enjoy reading your posts. Tyvm!
