The Last Phone Booth on Earth

image: epic mahoney
The last phone booth on Earth
is in a forgettable town
on a nondescript street
Perhaps that is why it still exists

The last phone booth on Earth
lost its phone book long ago
its metal cord hangs bare
from the wall

The last phone booth on Earth
is a glass cocoon
People crawl inside to talk
on cell phones
more often than on the pay phone
Some emerge as butterflies
some remain caterpillars
and some crawl back out
appearing to have died inside

The last phone booth on Earth
still has fingerprints
at the top and bottom
from dozens of college kids
climbing inside

The last phone booth on Earth
always disappoints
those looking for coins inside its silvery mouth
only to find stale wads of gum

In the last phone booth on Earth
the phone is ringing
It's for you.

Hello? Oh wow. It's someone who wanted to talk to the last person not writing haiku!

Fine Requiem for the Phone Booth. Loved the end . . the ringing out phone and no one answers 'cos they're all busy on the cell phones.

Oo-er, should I answer it?

Thinking about it - can't quite recall when I last saw a phone box (booth).

Nice nostalgic tale.
My neighbor who just retired from AT&T has an authentic olden wooden telephone booth once prevalent in wood laden hotel lobbies. He's installed it in his TV and sports bar room. Still has the phone with the dial and the light on top that goes on when the folding door closes.

I enjoyed the symbolism here, but the twist at the end really gripped me. That last stanza just nailed everything right on my soul. Nicely done!
Had a feel to it similar to Bruce Dawe's 'advice to an interplanetary visitor', which is one of my favourite poems.

Love this one! I can still hear the sound of the little metal lever where you got your change from and the sounds from the rotary dials way back in the day.

'Hello? Lena speaking.....' A nice little tribute to phone boxes..you captured the essence of the now declining 'numbers' (pardon the pun!) beautifully. One still exists round the corner from me but I don't know for how much longer......*sigh*
