Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Little Ghost

image from Magpie Tales, Google images
She was the kind of girl
everyone talked about and
no one talked to
There were rumors 'bout
what her daddy'd done
but no one really knew
In the mirrors at the Cut N Curl
the women clucked her name
said she was a pretty thing
it really was a shame
The menfolk of the town
they shook their heads and
mumbled low
through clouds of smoke
with whiskey graveled breath
don't want to know
She had a haunted look about her
seemed to hurt to smile
she was just a little ghost
dying all the while
Then one day she was gone
in her place an empty chair
no one knew what happened to her
and no one seemed to care.

Ahh. Wrote a similarly themed post a couple days ago about a girl in my 7th grade class, and this so reminds me of her.

Nicely done.

I feel bad for her. "the kind of girl everyone talked about and no one talked to" ...that says a lot, none of it good, and all of it about others, not her. I hope she left that place and went far away. I hope the rest of her story is happier.

Tragic but oh so very significant! We as a human race don't understand the psychological impact of 'intimate intrusion' at whatever age and stage in our lives and by whomever.

I think about this issue constantly and extensively. I enjoyed your quiet, subtle yet very poignant approach. Wonderfully written. Gracias!

Oooohh snap. Girl child, sometimes your way with words makes my teeth ache.

Very good and so darn sad. The fringe kids used to come and go never quite fitting in. Oh boy, don't I know this story on a personal level.

Oh what a realistic and sorrowful tale. Great interpretation of the prompt. I can see the facial expressions of the people, you wrote this so well!

Fresh take on the prompt, and beautifully expressed...

That last line sums it all up. Is the world full of empty chairs and empty people?
A delightful read that conjured up many differing images.
