She lies
Bruises easy
A fall she can't recall
She lives in fear; she dies within
Silence.
................................................
Daughter
She sees it all
Can't wait to leave this house
She weds a man who hits like Dad
Repeat.

Quite effectively told. And unfortunately, retold.
It is the cycle, the terrible cycle, and how can we expect young women to escape the lifestyle when it is the only one they know?
So often this happens. Sigh. How to break the pattern! Well expressed.
ugh...the cycle is painful to watch...i see it often in families that i have worked with...and sons that grow up like their fathers as well...so much in so few words...reality...
YES, Lola, that is exactly what happens. When pain feels like "love" because that is all one knows. I was that child and it took me till I was 40 to emerge on the other side.
Well done.
argh.
(but, cinquain! yay!)
oh wow. The horror in this, the sadness this girl experienced and to be a victim twice fold, wow. You maximized effectiveness so well here. Such an effective example of short verse. Really powerful write. Thanks
Got to break the cycle, somehow. So often, a girl just wants to escape from home, and makes a bad choice in order to do that. :-(
A tragic story, powerfully told.
This is very well put together, LM, with a painfully perfect title and theme, and the brevity makes the subject matter really stand out. You cover all the sad bases here.
This is so sad, but yet it is a tragedy that gets repeated over and over. Thanks for drawing attention to it...may the cycle end.
Powerful write, Lola...and that title...wow! I was that child that witnessed two very unhappy parents and thought I had ended the cycle with the choice of my husband...but no, I hadn't but did eventually leave. My daughters have not followed that path. So grateful for that. A very important topic for women...thanks for creating a space to share.
Heartbreaking and so sadly true. This month of awareness is so good.
Ouch on the repeat ~ The cycle is never-ending, isn't it~
Lovely cinquain LM ~ Cheers ~
A sad pattern.
Unfortunately so true.

Brilliant. A sad but all too often true occurence.
I'm glad of this attention to the new legislation. But, let us not forget that abuse, battering and bullying, has no gender,no age and is not just physical.
We need to educate and inculcate 'all', with other options available on how to release ones pain, anger. We need to learn how to deal with all this at the infant stages when first we can see, hear and feel.
Well Done! Yes, this is what I fear-patterns repeating themselves.
I don't have the alcoholic gene, but am related to it~ I hope it doesn't get passed on!
This is so sad and haunting~
if only the chain could be broken... do like how you brought it full circle
