Water Lilies

© Shanyn Silinski
Gather 'round and hear my story
Though it's sad and filled with woe
'Bout a Fairy Princess on a
hill and her love down below

Wizard king would not approve of
mixing mortal blood with kin
Told his daughter that to love this
man was nothing but a sin

Fairy Princess wept so hard
the skies they rained for days on end
and her love, he heard her wailing
vowed to go to her again

Upon entering the kingdom
he did find a fence so high
Wizard King had built it up to
reach the clouds within the sky

Come next morning an alarm
was sounded 'round the kingdom wide
Caught beneath the kingdom's fence
a man was found who'd drowned and died

No one ever knew if her love
drowned on going out or in
and the Fairy Princess in her
grief was never seen again

She had turned them both to water
lilies floating in the pond
They'll forever be together
not in this world but beyond.

Lola - this one had me fairly choked! A tale we've heard the world over, but this is a particularly beautiful version. Long live the lilly-pads....!

Nice weaving of the prompts...I like the fairy princess and her grief, turning them both to water lilies.

Though its sad, they are together in the world beyond. Happy day to you ~

I am so reminded of the classic tragedies... Romeo and Juliet, O. Henry's The Gift of The Magi, Rumplestiltskin. Love, irony, and surprising resolution are all included in this piece.

That's clever! Poor lovers, but at least they get to be together as lilies.

Your pad or mine? Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Great! I love the rhythm of this poem-song-legend-story. Children and adults alike would love it.

"not in this world but beyond". Beautiful, kiddo!

Epic in scope, valiant in effort, we shall ride the wings of this love into the afterlife and beyond..the touch of eternity and hope upon the brow of mankind. Loved this...

Wow. Nice. Sounds like one of those Elven lays from Lord of the Rings. That's been in my thoughts much lately.

Like I said, with the fairy tales, there's always a catch! Great storytelling, LM.

I appreciate the flow of this and the rhyme. The tale is exquisite and the lily pad ending is charming. Perfect fairy tale poem!
