Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

20/200+

Near Sighted by IMustBeDead
Every morning
I am born again
blind as an infant
the world a gauzy, milky
Impressionist painting

Before my first breath
fully escapes my lungs
I've already lunged
for them
It's innate
instinctual
a survival behavior, really

The movement is one
The pattern the same
lunge, grab, grasp, pull, open, place, adjust
Even in the dark
it must be done
before I arise
The behavior is a part of me
a reflex
(try not kicking out when the knee is tapped just so)

Contact lenses
make for clearer vision
but blurrier behavior
To wit:
my index finger pushing up upon
the bridge of my nose finds
nothing
and at bedtime
a slight pinch and pull of my thumb and pointer
atop my ear finds
nothing
The feeling
is quite bothersome
a sort of phantom limb

Though I curse the need for them
I miss them
when they're missing

Let there be sight.

Oh, I so know how that goes. I have two pairs, once for distance and one for close up, and it's such a pain in the butt to have to keep on switching. I wanted the invisible bifocals, but they told me the lenses were too small to have them.
Great prose though :)

I loved the opening image of gauzy, milky impressionist painting. I think you have taken the ordinary consideration of adjusting to contacts after spectacles and turned it into something remarkable.

I so enjoyed this! Perfection!

Love this but I will gladly trade mine in for contacts if I can wear the bi-focal lenses. We'll see when I go for an eye exam in the near future.

Ah this is me each time I rise! I hate my glasses as they resemble milk bottle bottoms - but they must be worn for about an hour until I wake up and pop in the good old contacts.

Love my contacts!

Wow, do you describe this well? I was blessed with excellent eyesight up until 2 years or so ago. Now I absolutely HATE the search for glasses when I misplace them(as I do often). And nothing makes me crankier...well, few things. I enjoyed this, as I could picture the scene EXACTLY through your words!

I'm sure all with contacts can relate... great description here!!

I, too, am myopic. I can read just fine without them, but anything further than an arm's length away is just a blobby blur. I keep my glasses right next to me when I sleep so that I can reach out and get them if I need to. Loved your poem, cos I live it all the time!

I am thankful I only need glasses when I read. Nice description of the milky impressionist painting ~

I want my perfect eyesight back too ~

I did the exact same thing when i wore contacts...now i am blind and can't hear without my glasses. you have stated your habit so creatively.

I'm lucky in that I'm only far sighted and the lenses are needed on an as required basis. Not bad for an old guy, huh?

The first stanza is exquisite... just loved it. The whole poem is a hoot and I find myself, unfortunately, beginning to understand these sentiments. For the first time, my drivers license states I must wear glasses and the tiny print I used to be able to read... forget it!

i am not there yet, but...i once, as a child read so much i strained my eyes and thought i went blind....it was rather frightening....

Oooohh... I kept going back and forth, one finger unconsciously pushing up my specs and smiling while I read your words. Then I swiped that picture for my own. Little redheads with freckles and glasses.... Mmmmmm......

Great, fun, whimsical and true!
I've needed glasses for most of my life, but only gave into wearing them as an adult. They were just something else that would get broken. I tried wearing them in seventh grade for a while, but after I punched a jerk in his face for calling me four eyes, I quit wearing them in public again...
