Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Half-Hearted

source
I tried to get you off my mind
You came to me in dreams instead
Awakened with you in my head

Convinced that I was not that kind
I told myself that I'd forget
Despite the years, I haven't yet

Afraid of feelings I might find
Avoided what I knew I knew
As I grew older, they grew too

Too far along to push rewind
A silly crush that wouldn't last
was relegated to the past

I wonder what I left behind
The passion I could never show
The part of me I'll never know.

unrequited love or just or a matter of not pursuing your passionate instinct?

The contemplation of things past and what might have been has universal appeal. I think your central stanza is a particularly strong pivot for the movement of the poem.

Can't help thinking about the past sometimes. Hope the present is esp., good - better than the past could ever have been.

Love how you have executed your Constanza.. Somehow lingering on the past is emphasised in the form. Well done,

"Avoided what I knew I knew"---you've described 'denial' to a tee!
