Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Resolutions

source
The second day of the New Year
opens its eyes
Broken resolutions lay
on the floor like a shattered champagne flute
Sweep them into the dustpan
and lay them to rest with the stale leftovers
You think they are forgotten
Yet they merely lay buried
with the second verse of "Auld Lang Syne"
and the tiny shard of glass
that pricks your foot
in the most tender spot
like a broken promise.

Ow. I misread it at first as "state leftovers" and i was picturing Stalin throwing out old banana peels or something. I need help, I realize!

Every year I make a resolution not to eat asparagus, which i hate. I keep my resolution every year! This year i also resolve not to write a collection of haiku.

I like the idea of sweeping the broken resolutions into the dustbin!!!!

I will only eat asparagus if Fireblossom does... I hope she hangs tough...most resolutions last about that long... so your poem rings true...

The metaphor of the glass under(in)foot works really well, LM--but let's hope it's from one of those toasts that are so final you have to shatter your glass.

Love it! I am making no resolutions this year so I can't be cut by their broken edges.

I know, I know, that space in the unconscious which holds everything we may work with someday if only to move away from what hurts us. Very wonderful locating of the storage of the neglected.

when I'm resolute about something i tell no one and then pat myself in the back when it comes true.

I'm resolute about recognizing this moment for this moment is my new year and then the next moment will be my new year... etc, etc, etc (from 'the King and I').

may you have a lovely next moment

Your last four lines were especially powerful. Well done. Is that your mouse illustration with the snowflakes upper right? If so...I love it, truly.

Very clever - I have my broom in the corner of the room - ready for action :)

Or is the shard that pierces your foot a persistent reminder, a sign you've overlooked something?
Great writing.

Terrific stuff, just the right combination of a wee bit of edginess and a dollop of winsome.

Ah, yes.. it's those tiny shards that remind us that we once sort to improve on our own work in progress.

All the best for 2014, LM.

I no longer bother with resolutions that will only need forgetting.
