Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

For Allison on Graduation

The summer's heat can melt away the time
Remembering when you were still a child
When autumn's chill comes, you're no longer mine

I crave the hours that moved so slow and mild
When days were filled with toys and song and play
Remembering when you were still a child

If I could keep the coming months at bay
I'd relive every minute spent with you
When days were filled with toys and song and play

I crave the time when it was just we two
And when you leave to live life on your own
I'll relive every minute spent with you

I beam at how you've blossomed as you've grown
So proud to see the woman you are now
And when you leave to live life on your own

I'll marvel at the seasons past and how
The summer's heat can melt away the time
So proud to see the woman you are now
When autumn's chill comes, you're no longer mine.

This poem brought on a very heart-felt sigh from me, another mother of daughters, both of whom have left home to study far away from me. Who knew 18 years could fly by so fast, and days without them go so slow?

Very moving poem LM ~ As a mom myself I know the sadness & pride in watching that little girl grow up so fast ~ I would rather keep the coming months at bay too ~

Pride, tinged with melancholy, and so beautifully expressed.
This is that rare thing and precious : a universal poem!

Absolutely wonderful poem! I really hope your daughter appreciates it, as it portrays such a wonderful sense of a mother's love and hope.

My girl graduates in a couple of weeks. This brings a tear to my eye!
She is lovely and you have done a wonderful job~ Remember all the joy and there will be more, Mom! There will-I am going through the same thing as you~ Where did time go?

This is beautiful and sad! You captured my heart with your words~

Something every mother , anywhere in the world , can relate to....all those mixed feelings of nostalgia over a childhood that has edged past, maternal pride and the angst of realising that letting go isn't going to be so much more than one imagined. Yet ...that's life. :-) Was browsing through your posts. Loved it :-)
