Diary of a Girl

Strut down dangerous passages
Alleys and parking lots
the stage
Nervy
Lean in pick-up windows
Confound rednecks
Oddly, opposites attract
Killer heels stamp out
bitter innocence
nasty cigarette butts
Trademark golden haired wig
Lashes blink
silvery sequins
Razor- sharp nails
painted to perfection
Beneath blouse blossom
twin deceits
Doting diva fans
fuel  alpha- girl addiction
Years endlessly unspool
Frayed cashmere sweater
nicked from sister.

submitted for Imaginary Garden With Real Toads, Get Listed, in which we are asked to compose a poem with some or all of the 26 listed words (in bold)

Video of the Westboro Baptist Church counter-protest in Annapolis, MD 1/2/13
(If you look closely in the crowd, you can see my daughter and me with our "Congrats Newlyweds!" and "Love Ignites More Fires Than Hate Can Extinguish" signs!)

What an excellent use of a list of words. Amazing how you made them speak for the cause!

Damn, Lola, as an ally of the LGBT movement for civil rights, I am SO glad you got to protest the Westboro jerks. Also glad your daughter was there. Riley used to come to many anti-war protests during the Bush years. (Also, as a member of the Christian Left, I think Westboro and their ilk have done more to chase people away from ALL churches than anyone.)

As for the poem, blew me away. This is a woman you don't mess with, and I like that angle. Peace and solidarity, Amy

Now I saw the video and DAMN! What an amazing counter-protest. As an activist of many years on many fronts, all I can say is, your organizers are very good. And didn't she just vogue for the cameras? Love me some drag queens. Beautiful souls. Amy

I love those pants! Also, lots of great phrases in the way you turned the word list into this poem. I'm so glad to see people protesting against those jerks and their hate. Thanks for doing it, LM, and bringing your offspring along. A wonderful learning experience

Speaking of sisters, is that Dee Snyder? ;-)

The video is awesome, especially the Na Na Hey Hey song! I love it when people counter WBC's hate with good spirits and positivity.

wow! The descriptions are vivid with your spare lines and words. Then the photo gave it even more punch.
