Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. Leonard Cohen

Sometimes You Drive

Never Easy by untaintedsoul
Sometimes you drive the road
Sometimes the road drives you
When you don't know the difference
Every place is the bad part of town

Sometimes the road drives you
Makes you do things you don't want to
Every place is the bad part of town
And all the strangers know your name

You do things you don't want to
When you give up the wheel
All the strangers know your name
But you don't remember why you came

When you give up the wheel
And you're just along for the ride
You don't remember why you came
Don't care if you make it home again

You're just along for the ride
You gotta keep up the drive
Don't care if you make it home again
You let the road decide

You gotta keep up the drive
Though you can't say if you'll arrive
You let the road decide
Between dead and alive

Though you can't say if you'll arrive
When you don't know the difference
Between dead and alive
Sometimes you drive the road.

This was interesting - the form almost makes it hypnotic, as driving on a long, long road. Well done.

Oh, a hearty round of applause from me! The pantoum worked so very well with this theme - the continuum of the journey, the repetition of existence. I thoroughly enjoyed this poem and am going back right now to read it again.

I love the freedom of letting the road decide...so often I have it all laid out and arrive nowhere...

I have a friend at work who writes and sings his own songs. He's got this gravelly Eddie Vedder kind of voice with a country twang that's hard to get sometimes. I just went back and reread that and heard it in his voice. It works!

I can smell a Grammy!

Very good! I love the pacing in it also. I know I've been there, in both a figurative and literal sense.

I like the concept of sometimes you driving the road and sometimes the road drives you. Kind of reminds me of my college days when I ended up all sorts of places trying to be grown up.
